Why do I keep making the same mistakes in English even though I know the rules?

When should I use in, on and at?

Think point–surface–container: at for a point (at 5pm, at the bus stop), on for a surface or a day (on the table, on Monday), in for an enclosed space or period (in the car, in July). The exceptions are what you drill. Learn more →

What’s the difference between make and do?

Make creates a result (make a mistake, make a decision); do performs an activity or task (do homework, do the dishes). Many pairings are fixed collocations — drilling them is faster than reasoning about them. Learn more →

When do I use say and when do I use tell?

One rule fixes most errors: tell takes a person (tell me, tell your boss), say doesn’t (say something, say that you’re sorry). So it’s “he told me” — never “he said me”. Learn more →

Should I use the gerund or the infinitive after a verb?

It depends on the first verb: enjoy doing but want to do. Five verbs even change meaning — “I stopped smoking” and “I stopped to smoke” are opposite stories. Learn more →
